Uganda: House Building and Safari

The opportunity to combine a social work assignment with a photo safari.
The Task

Construction of a house for orphans with their house mother in the l’ESPERANCE children’s village Kinyo in Uganda. A construction team of about 12 men/women, about half of whom have manual experience, should be able to complete the task in about two weeks.

Housing

In two simple guest houses with magnificent views over Lake Victoria, each with two rooms and toilet with shower, small balcony.

EssenEating together

The food is tasty, healthy and digestible. The staple food is the plantain, from which a solid porridge is prepared, matooke, which tastes similar to mashed potatoes. 

This is usually accompanied by vegetables and peanut sauce. 

Alternatives are posho, a corn porridge, cassava or sweet potatoes. 

Delicious fish, fresh from the lake, or meat can be prepared.

Safari

Uganda has a wide range of national parks. The most important are:

  1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A forest land reserve with mountain gorillas, elephants, chimpanzees and other monkey species, as well as various small antelopes.
  2. Kibale-Nationalpark: A forest area unique in its biodiversity, it is home to over 1,000 chimpanzees, the black & white and red guereza, and forest elephants.
  3. Murchison Falls National Park: The largest protected area in Uganda with lions, buffaloes, elephants, Uganda kobs, Rothschild giraffes, Nile crocodiles, hippos, many birds.
  4. Queen Elizabeth National Park: At Lake Edward and Lake George with hippos, lions, buffalos, elephants, zebra mongooses, giant forest hogs, waterbucks etc.
  5. Rwenzori Mountains National Park: Up to 5,109 m high with firn and snow fields, tree-high erica, elephants, chimpanzees, buffalos, leopards, forest pigs, okapis.
  6. Kidepo Valley National Park: A dry savannah with Greater Kudu, Cheetah, herds of Elephant and Buffalo.
  7. Lake Mburo National Park: savannah landscape with acacias, zebras, warthogs, buffalos, impalas, eland, numerous other antelope and gazelle species.
  8. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: the main attraction here are the rare mountain gorillas in the area of the nine solitary, forested and active Virunga volcanoes.

General Information

Uganda is, except for some border regions, a safe country with very friendly people. The national language is English. The village is located at about 1,200 meters. The daytime temperature is usually between a pleasant 20 and 25 degrees.

Length of Stay

14 days, plus the time for the individually scheduled photo safari.

Safari

This is the responsibility of the participants, but planning assistance will be gladly provided. If possible, a local guide will also be organized.
